Born 1970 in eastern Tennessee, Mitchell Lonas has been a commissioned painter since the age of 15, with early paintings consisting of portraiture, landscape and still life. While studying Art History at the University of Tennessee, Lonas apprenticed with several premier painters – learning classical techniques while at the same time developing his own unique and original approach to meaningful art. Methods in his painting are therefore primarily self-taught, and his mediums range from water color and illustrations to acrylics and oil.

Currently, Lonas’ work explores seemingly paradoxical themes of vulnerability and strength - to live ones life honestly and openly, while also remaining grounded and strong. Paintings feature intricately armored but relatively small song birds – symbolizing the fragility of our own lives in the midst of our endless pursuit of balance and understanding. The artist currently resides in Asheville, North Carolina, and welcomes inquiries about these and other works.
